Paul Thomas Anderson's Next Film Is About A High School Kid In The '70s & Will Begin Filming Early Next Year

For a while now, we’ve known that Paul Thomas Anderson was hard at work on a new project. Back in April, it was revealed that Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio had passed on a film directed by Anderson in favor of working with Guillermo del Toro. Of course, that didn’t last long. Anyway, since then we’ve been curious what Anderson had up his sleeve. And thanks to a new report, we now know.

According to THR, Anderson is getting ready to begin casting on his new, untitled film, which will begin shooting in early 2020. However, judging by the plot of this film, it feels as if this is a new project that isn’t the same as the one that DiCaprio was circling earlier this year.

The report claims that the new film will take place in the ‘70s and be set in the San Fernando Valley, following a young high school student that also happens to be a successful child actor. The film is said to be an ensemble that could have intersecting storylines. Now, if the latter information is true, then perhaps there’s a chance that the film is the same as the one that DiCaprio was thinking about working on, but we won’t know for sure until we learn more information. But then again, do you use DiCaprio in a supporting role or save him for something where he’s the main attraction?

Regardless, this is a project that’s going to bring Anderson back to the United States to shoot, as his last film, “Phantom Thread,” was filmed in England. Now, the filmmaker is going to shoot in California and have a film set in the area that he grew up in, which he also did for films like “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” and “Punch-Drunk Love.”

No release date has been confirmed, but depending on how fast Anderson works, we could be looking at an awards season run in 2020.
