Exclusive Music Video: Rufus Wainwright's 'Secret Sister' From 'Rebel Hearts'

This year’s Best Original Song category is wide open. Sure, there are songs from animated musicals such as “Encanto” and new tracks from superstars such as Beyonce, but for the most part, there are few locks when it comes to the Oscar race. One composition that is hoping to crash the party is Rufus Wainwright’s “Secret Sister” from the documentary “Rebel Hearts.”

The documentary chronicles The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a group of nuns who took on the Catholic Church establishment in 1960s Los Angeles. Directed by Pedro Kos (“Bending the Arc”), the film mixes archival footage with original animation to chronicle their story. It debuted at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and also screened at AFI DOCS and the prestigious Hot Docs festival this year. It’s also eligible for the Best Documentary Film Academy Award.

A two-time Grammy nominee, Wainwright is no stranger to film compositions having co-authored or written songs for “Meet the Robinsons,” “Any Day Now,” and “The Baxter” among others. He’s also performed in films such as “Moulin Rouge!,” “Zoolander,” “I Am Sam,” “Big Daddy,” “The Aviator” and “Brokeback Mountain.” With shortlist campaigning for Original Song well underway, Wainwright has released a new video of a live performance of “Secret Sister” that you can find embedded in this post.
