'Sharpshooter' Trailer: Zhang Yimou Returns With A New War Film About A Korean War Sniper

At age 70, Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, we’re currently awaiting news about the US release of his seventh film since 2011, titled “Under the Light.” And as we await that date, we’re already getting the trailer for his next-next film, “Sharpshooter.”

While the new trailer for “Sharpshooter” lacks English subtitles, it’s pretty clear to get the general idea of the film. But if you need some blanks filled, the film is said to follow the true story of a young Korean sniper who injured more than 200 American soldiers over the course of 32 days during the Korean War.

While action films are nothing new to Zhang Yimou, the filmmaker is probably best known for his martial arts epics. Previously, he directed films such as “Hero,” House of the Flying Dagger,” and “The Great Wall.” The latter of which is a bit of a controversial feature with worldwide audiences because of its inclusion of Matt Damon in the cast. However, he followed that up in 2018 with the acclaimed release of “Shadow.”

The film stars Chen Yongsheng, Zhang Yu, and Zhang Yi. As mentioned, “Sharpshooter” is the eighth film from Zhang Yimou in the last decade or so and shows the acclaimed filmmaker is working faster than ever before.

“Sharpshooter” is set to arrive in Chinese cinemas on February 1. A US release has yet to be announced. You can watch the new trailer below.
