With the world’s theater owners meeting at the annual CinemaCon showcase starting tomorrow, the industry appears to have its first likely billion-dollar grosser on its hands. “Super Mario Galaxy” earned another $69 million over the weekend to hit $308 million domestic in just 12 days. Worldwide, it has pulled in $628.7 million. With little family competition in sight, it could hit the $1 billion mark within the next two weeks.
The only new release was Kat Coiro’s “You, Me & Tuscany,” which earned $8.7 million in 3,151 venues. That was below pre-release tracking, which saw a $10-12 million debut. The global tally is at $9.1 million so far. The romantic comedy starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page earned mixed reviews (53 on Metacritic, 69% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), but an A- CinemaScore. This sort of movie has disappeared from studio release schedules and has been relegated to streaming. At a reported $18 million production cost, it won’t be a significant loss in theaters for Universal, and the studio unintentionally did a solid for its competitors with a test case for why it might have been better on Peacock (or banking a bigger movie star in the lead).
“Project Hail Mary” remained in second place with another $24.5 million in its fourth weekend for $256 million domestic. That’s down just 23% from the previous frame, a stellar result. Worldwide, the Amazon MGM Studios blockbuster has made $510.6 million to date, with an eventual $600+ million overall a lock.
A24’s “The Drama” dropped just 39% from its opening weekend for another $8.7 million and $30.8 million domestic so far. Worldwide, the Robert Pattinson and Zendaya drama has pulled in over $45 million.
Genki Kawamura’s “Exit 8,” which premiered at Cannes last May, did a fantastic $1.4 million on just 495 screens for Neon. Another genre play, Daniel Goldhaber’s horror flick “Faces of Death,” earned positive reviews (63 on Metacritic) and pulled in an OK $1.7 million on 1,678 screens.
Among other releases, “Hoppers” hit $157 million domestic and $354.4 million global. “Reminders of Him” has pulled in $47.4 million domestic and $84.1 million global, while “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” has reached $22 million in the U.S. and $37 million worldwide.
New releases next weekend include wide drops of “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” and “Normal” with Bob Odenkirk, while David Lowery’s “Mother Mary” arrives in limited release.
