In a genre most known for its slasher franchises, James Wan and Peter Safran‘s “The Conjuring” reigns supreme at the horror box office. Over eight films, the paranormal horror series has taken in more than $2 billion worldwide. That’s not just incredible for a horror franchise, but for any film franchise.

So, why wouldn’t Warner Bros. and Atomic Monster build on their continued success? “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” in theaters next month, looks to repeat the series’ winning formula, with franchise vet Michael Chaves back as director and Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson back as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time, the Warrens investigate a haunted house in 1986 Pennsylvania, with eight witnesses convinced an evil presence has invaded their home.
Along with Farmiga and Wilson, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” also stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Steve Coulter, Rebecca Calder, Elliott Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadson, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.
Chave directs a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick for “Last Rites,” from a story by Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan. Executive producers on the film include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Hans Ritter, Johnson-McGoldrick, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, and Chaves.
“The Conjuring: Last Rights” hits theaters and IMAX on September 5. Watch a trailer for the new film in the horror franchise below.
