‘The Diplomat’ Trailer: Season 3 Of Netflix Political Thriller Starring Keri Russell Arrives October 16

Netflix’s political thriller “The Diplomat” returns this October, plunging deeper into the combustible mix of global brinkmanship and domestic chaos that has made it one of the streamer’s most acclaimed series. The drama has thrived under creator Debora Cahn, whose pedigree on “The West Wing” and “Homeland” established her as a master of high-stakes storytelling laced with biting wit.

Series star Keri Russell praised Cahn’s singular style in a recent Deadline interview, noting how her “fierce, intelligent humor” is “so precise, and it’s so sharp,” while also pointing out that the scripts manage to balance that wit with “the backdrop of these weighty world issues.” Russell stressed that what might feel improvised on screen is actually carefully constructed: “These are little tiny moments that she has written, and then we get to perform.”

With season four already greenlit, the series’ long game is only beginning to reveal itself.

“The Diplomat” stars Russell alongside Bradley Whitford, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ail Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, Allison Janney, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, and Miguel Sandoval. Cahn serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer, with Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie also producing.

The story follows U.S. diplomat Kate Wyler as she juggles defusing international crises and navigating the crumbling foundations of her marriage to fellow diplomat Hal Wyler. In Season 3, Kate is thrust into even greater turmoil after President Rayburn’s sudden death and President Grace Penn’s appointment. While Kate works to keep fragile alliances intact, Hal schemes behind the scenes with one explosive objective: to make his wife the next vice president.

Here’s the official season three synopsis:

In Season Three of THE DIPLOMAT, Ambassador Kate Wyler lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the President is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is the leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn.

Season three of “The Diplomat” will arrive on Netflix on October 16. Watch the new trailer below.
