Watch: First Clip From Bennett Miller's Cannes Drama 'Foxcatcher' Starring Channing Tatum & Steve Carell

Foxcatcher

Originally slated to be released last fall, Sony Pictures Classics yanked “Foxcatcher” from the schedule soon after the trailer dropped online, citing Bennett Miller‘s need for more time to finish the film. Well, it’s in the can and playing Cannes (sorry), set to premiere in Competition next week. So what was the hold up? A lengthy post-production process.

“It’s been a huge editing process,” Miller told Screen Daily. “These films are not made in the normal way. I don’t work from a screenplay. They’re organised in an outline and the scenes we decide to shoot we explore in rehearsal and again on the day with the actors. It makes for a much more complicated editing process.” That’s pretty fascinating stuff, and as you might surmise, the story of the wealthy John du Pont who put his cash behind developing an Olympic-level wrestling team has its share of humor … and definitely tragedy.

“It’s the kind of film that’s very funny until it’s not funny,” Miller said. “The absurdity of the characters is funny.”

You can get a taste of what Miller is cooking with the first clip of the movie below. “Foxcatcher” arrives on November 14th.
