‘Vox Lux’ Trailer: Natalie Portman Attempts to Nab Another Oscar in the Upcoming Musical Drama

Watch out Lady Gaga. Natalie Portman is on the scene.

Although “A Star is Born” is still firmly planted in the minds and hearts of nearly everyone in America, it appears as if the upcoming musical drama “Vox Lux” might find itself in the role of the dark horse when it comes time to nominate the best films of 2018. Considering NEON is scheduling the film’s theatrical release at the peak of awards season, “Vox Lux” seems intent on stealing a stint in the spotlight.

Most critics who caught the film at Venice and TIFF in 2018 have showered the film, and particularly Portman’s performance, with praise — The Playlist’s Jessica Kiang compared Portman to a foulmouthed Ariana Grande with a God complex — you will probably hear much more about “Vox Lux” in the coming months. Interestingly, actor-turned-director Brady Corbet stated that his sophomore feature is not simply a statement on the music industry, but is also an examination of modern-day American culture.

“You have a top headline about a mass shooting, and just below it, a story about Kim Kardashian,” said Corbet. “We’re accustomed to that on the front of our newspapers, the grouping of things that are totally inconsequential with those that are life-altering and tragic.”

Furthermore, the director noted that he “didn’t have to look very hard to find parallels between celebrity culture and socio-political drama.” When asked what he wants people to take away from the film, Corbet replied that he hopes that “Vox Lux” serves as a timestamp of what Americans have undergone over the past two decades.

“Vox Lux” is scheduled to take the stage on December 7. Watch the latest trailer below:
