Guillermo del Toro Has An Idea For A Jabba The Hutt 'Star Wars' Origin Story

It’s simply not San Diego Comic-Con without Guillermo del Toro. Like Kevin Smith, who held forth at his own panel this year regarding basically any subject he wants, del Toro is a mainstay. And as usual, he’s got a lot to talk about.

While he’s putting the finishing touches on his gothic period horror film “Crimson Peak” for an October release, “Pacific Rim 2” is already set to shoot in this fall. I assume that should mean around November, because del Toro will be busy with “Crimson Peak” press in October and likely would start shooting a few weeks later (though, since he’s a mad man, he could start earlier and juggle both). Let’s assume that means he’s in pre-production as we speak (it’s set for an August 4, 2017 release).

Asked about “Star Wars,” del Toro revealed he has an idea for the franchise, though he cautioned the following is merely idle talk. “This is not real —this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it,” he told Yahoo Movies. “I would do the sort of ‘Godfather‘ saga [about what] Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”

That’s actually not that bad of an idea —are you listening, Kathleen Kennedy and company? Yet del Toro was not at Comic-Con to give Disney free advice —rather, he was there to promote “Crimson Peak” starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam, and over the weekend, a tralier for the Maze Of Madness Halloween theme park attraction was unveiled. As a bonus, here are a few interviews with del Toro discussing “Crimson Peak,” “Pacific Rim 2,” and the second season of his show “The Strain.” Watch below and also check out some Comic-Con posters for “Crimson Peak.”
