Michael Giacchino Denies 'Werewolf By Night' Cameos: "Rumors Are Insanely Inaccurate 99.9% Of The Time"

While it had been rumored and reported for months before, it wasn’t until this year’s D23 that we actually got confirmation that Marvel Studios was going to release a Halloween special on Disney+ titled “Werewolf By Night.” But when the studio finally released a teaser, not only did fans realize that Marvel Studios isn’t just dipping its toes into horror, “Werewolf By Night” is leaping headfirst into the deep end, embracing the old-school Universal Monsters-era of the genre. And not only that, it feels like the first time Marvel Studios has truly broken its mold and deviated from a formula that seemed to always work. This led fans to wonder— how is this connected to everything else? Well, apparently it’s connected, but not as connected as fans might hope.

While promoting the upcoming release of “Werewolf By Night,” director Michael Giacchino teased the origins of the Halloween special and where it stands in the MCU. Spoiler alert— it exists right alongside “Iron Man” and the “Avengers” films, but don’t expect cameos and callouts.

How “Werewolf By Night” came to be, according to an interview with Empire, is that Giacchino was asked what he’d like to do next by Kevin Feige. Giacchino, of course, has composed the music for a number of MCU properties but is now going to make his debut as a director. He immediately mentioned his love of “Werewolf By Night,” which got the ball rolling.

“I still have the comics that I bought when I was a kid,” said Giacchino. “Kevin and I kept talking about it, and it’s evolved into this love letter to monsters and the humanity behind them.”

So, with the show about to debut on Disney+ next month, fans are speculating about how everything will connect to the greater MCU. More specifically, there are rumors abound that horror-esque characters, such as Blade, will perhaps make an appearance in “Werewolf By Night.” This is something Giacchino is quick to shut down.

“Rumors are insanely inaccurate, I would say 99.9% of the time,” explained Giacchino in an interview with One Take News. “The thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that everyone thinks that every single thing is going to be connected. Every single thing. And it doesn’t mean that we’re not connected, but I didn’t feel the need to blatantly say we were.”

He added, “When I was a kid and I’d pull a comic off the shelf, this particular ‘Werewolf By Night’ had nothing to do with anything else in the Marvel Universe. What’s wrong with that? That’s ok! They can all live together, but we don’t need to always show them together.”

So, if you’re hoping to see “Werewolf By Night” make mention of the Blip or have a surprise appearance by Shang-Chi, you’re probably out of luck. It appears the Halloween special is still part of the MCU but exists firmly in its own pocket of the universe.

“Werewolf By Night” debuts on Disney+ on October 7.
