Got a Tip?

Steven Spielberg Wants Chris Hemsworth For ‘Robopocalypse’

nullSteven Spielberg is known for working efficiently, but every man has his limits. Originally slated to be relaesed next July, 20th Century Fox wisely realised that with the director busy on "Lincoln," there was no way that could happen and pushed the release date one more year. But make no mistake, following this habit of switching up awards bait with multiplex blockbusters, Spielberg is going to be smashing shit up for his next movie, and he now has his leading man.

Deadline reports that Spielberg has met with Thor himself and wants him for the movie, but they caution that no offer has formally been made, so nothing is quite official just yet. Based on the book by Daniel H. Wilson and adapted by Drew Goddard, the sci-fi thriller is set in the near future where robots are a part of everyday human life…until a sentient artificial intelligence underneath the ice in Alaska programs them to kill. Written "World War Z" style, the book is via oral history and fleshed out with surveillance footage, secondhand accounts and more, in a book that apparently falls somewhere between "The Terminator" and Isaac Asimov (but more the former than the latter). Awesome.

“It’s a movie about a global war between man and machine," Spielberg said last year. “I had a great time creating the future on ‘Minority Report,’ and it’s a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would. ‘Robopocalypse’ takes place in 15 or 20 years, so it’ll be another future we can relate to. It’s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. It’s not the newest theme, it’s been done throughout science fiction, but it’s a theme that becomes more relevant every year.”

Should it all come together for Hemsworth, it will be another big feather in the cap for the actor who is already achoring one franchise, will likely have another if the "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel happens, and who is broadening his horizons a bit, spending a good part of this year shooting the racing drama "Rush" with Ron Howard.

Again this isn't official — the paperwork hasn't even been drawn up — but you can bet Hemsworth (or any actor really) will make sure their calendar is clear for Spielberg. "Robopocalypse" will hit theaters on April 25, 2014.
