“Arrival” took an acclaimed short story by Ted Chiang, adaptedĀ it into a smart sci-fi script, and made what turned into a box-office hit and nominee for eight Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Now, the producers behind the movie are hoping to make that formula work again.
Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps have tapped James Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now,” “The End Of The Tour“) to direct “Inconstant Moon,” with the project set up over at Fox 2000. Based on the award-winning short story by Larry Niven, with Daniel Casey set to write the screenplay, the story will unfold across one apocalyptic night with a couple facing the end of the world…or something else entirely. It’s a really good premise, and while Ponsoldt might not seem the guy for big sci-fi, at the heart of the story is the sort of intimate character stuff he’s known for.
If this all sounds vaguely familiar, maybe you saw the episode of “The Outer Limits” in the ’90s that was also based on Niven’s story. But let’s just say, the productions value here will probably be a lot higher this time around… [THR]
