This weekend will see audiences finally get their first chance to experience the first solo “Supergirl” feature film, helmed by Craig Gillespie, in theaters since the 1984 iteration, and see Aussie actress Milly Alcock (“House of the Dragon”) inhabiting that beloved comic book role. There is a bright future for Kara in the greater DCU as she’s already filming scenes for James Gunn’s “Man of Tomorrow,” which feels like a proto-Justice League as she’ll be helping out when cosmic supervillain Brainiac forces Clark to team up with Lex Luthor (set to wear his iconic War Suit, allowing him to fight superpowered threats).
While it’s up in the air if we’ll be getting another “Supergirl” installment after Kara gets her solo spotlight this weekend ahead of her joining her cousin Clark on Earth for “Man of Tomorrow,” but DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran (Gunn’s partner in crime as they flesh out and expand the DCU together in both film and television) has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Alcock’s heroine is going to be part of the next big film. However, the studio exec stopped short of revealing what will be, so let the speculation begin.

“Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ It’s all more Earth-based. So we have ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that,” Safran said of the future of Alcock’s future beyond these two confirmed movies.
We know that “Supergirl” screenwriter Ana Nogueira is writing their “Wonder Woman” reboot (seemingly happening alongside the upcoming Amazon series “Paradise Lost“) and “Teen Titans” pic. An assumption could be made that a third Superman-centric installment alongside the growing Justice Gang (we assume is simply a surrogate for the Justice League before the trinity is finally assembled) is more than likely in some form of development or early outline stage, as it feels like Gunn is aiming to churn out a trilogy as quickly as possible before possibly moving on to other corners of the DCU.
While some aren’t totally sold on the idea that a solo Lobo movie (Guy Ritchie and Michael Bay tried to get their versions made in the past) with Jason Momoa is in the cards, looking at the DCU project line-up, they’re not exactly making predictable risk-averse choices (nobody thought a “Clayface” movie would ever happen or DC Studios would attempt to put “Sgt. Rock” back in development). Other options could be a third “Superman” movie where Kara, possibly with the help of Brainiac, becomes a recluant villain, or maybe, just maybe, she ends up working with the Green Lantern Corps to combat other cosmic threats in the galaxy (we shouldn’t rule out “Justice League” either).
Anywho, you can read The Playlist’s review and get ready to watch Supergirl fly on the big screen this Friday.
