Let’s be honest, Quibi isn’t doing so hot right now. We are just over two months post-launch and the fledgling streaming service isn’t taking off in the way the executives could have hoped. But maybe all the service needs is a dose of Bill Murray in “The Now” to draw interest?
As seen in the new first-look photos from the upcoming Quibi series (via EW), “The Now,” Bill Murray and Dave Franco star in a new show that hopes to turn the tide of the mobile-first streamer. “The Now” tells the story of a man (Franco) who comes from a family rife with mental illness and is reeling from the news that his brother just committed suicide and his girlfriend left him. That’s when he vows to live in “the now” (get it?) and not follow the path laid before him by his family history. He enlists the help of a quirky therapist (Murray) and his gang of friends to help him along the way.
Obviously, Franco is the lead in the series, but folks are probably most intrigued by the addition of Murray to the cast. The comedy legend is notoriously picky with his career choices, so by joining “The Now,” it’s almost as if the series gets the Bill Murray Quality Assurance Stamp Of Approval. And for Franco, he got the chance to work alongside one of the best.
“He lived up to everything that I wanted him to be,” said Franco. “After my first scene with him, I realized that the best thing for me to do was throw away everything that I had prepared and just jump on whatever train he was on.”
But just because the series has a bit of a bleak premise, that doesn’t mean the series is going to be a bummer. Far from it, according to Franco.
“The show is very hopeful, even though it has these serious undertones,” explained the actor.
“The Now” launches on Quibi on July 13. You can see the first-look photos below:
