'The Duchess' Trailer: Katherine Ryan Makes Her Scripted Debut In Netflix's Comedy About Single Motherhood

If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, you probably know the name Katherine Ryan. However, if you’re in the US, she’s definitely not the household name she is in the UK, which is interesting considering she’s a Canadian. Basically, Ryan is one of the biggest stand-ups in the world and is now transitioning to the world of narrative comedy series thanks to Netflix, a company that doesn’t care what country you live in or work in, as long as you attract eyeballs.

As seen in the first trailer for “The Duchess,” Ryan takes her brand of raunchy humor about motherhood and living life as a woman in the UK to the scripted series about a mom that is separated from her daughter’s biological father and is now desperate to find a way to have another kid. But without the whole male side of things. This leads her to the idea of a sperm donor, which again, would be easier if she had a working, cordial relationship with a man that was decent enough to offer up his goods. Instead, she has to navigate life as a single mom that will do what it takes to have another child, even if it means trying to negotiate with her dirtbag ex.

As mentioned, “The Duchess” stars Ryan, who also created, produced, and wrote on the series. This isn’t the first project she’s teamed up with Netflix on. Her previous two stand-up specials, “Katherine Ryan: In Trouble” (2017) and “Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room” (2019), both debuted on Netflix and were big hits for the streaming service.
