Awkwafina & Karen Gillan To Co-Star In Action-Comedy 'Shelly' For Director Jude Weng

The careers of actresses Awkwafina and Karen Gillan seem to be taking off at the same exact time, but both in very different ways. Regardless of how they achieved superstar status, it appears that both actresses are set to star opposite each other in the upcoming action-comedy film, “Shelly.”

According to Deadline, Awkwafina and Gillan will co-star in, “Shelly,” which is written by Michael Doneger and Liz Storm and directed by Jude Weng. The film follows the story of the title character, a cold-hearted hitman (Awkwafina) that turned to the deadly career after being bullied in high school. But things get thrown for a loop when the next job forces her to target her old high school tormentor (Gillan).

As mentioned, Awkwafina and Gillan are both at the top of their games right now. Awkwafina is coming off of a starring role in the critically-acclaimed drama, “The Farewell,” where she was able to flex her dramatic muscle, as well as show off that charm that makes her so damn good in films and TV series. Gillan, on the other hand, has been riding high thanks to roles in massive films such as the “Guardians of the Galaxy” (and its sequel), “Avengers: Infinity War” (plus ‘Endgame’), and the two recent ‘Jumanji’ films, the latter of which also featured Awkwafina. Interestingly, Awkwafina is about to join Gillan as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she stars in the upcoming ‘Shang-Chi.’

Weng is a veteran director that has spent a number of years working on TV series such as “Crashing,” “Black-ish,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “The Good Place.” She’s also set to make her feature directing debut in the upcoming Netflix film, “Finding Ohana.”

There’s no release date planned for “Shelly,” as the film is still hunting for distribution, but with Gillan and Awkwafina on board to star, this action-comedy will likely have no problem finding a studio.
