As we head into December, we head deeper into awards season and that means accolades bestowed upon films deemed worthy. Over the weekend, the European Film Awards were handed out with Michael Haneke’s “Amour” leading the night with wins in the four major categories: best film, director, actor (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and actress (Emmanuelle Riva).
The last time the minister of fear was nominated was for 2009’s “The White Ribbon,” which similarly won best film and director while riding a wave of acclaim all the way to the Kodak Theatre as it was nominated for Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography. It seems likely that “Amour” will be a major figure in the Foreign Film race this season too as it, like Haneke’s 2009 film, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year and Austria selected the film as its official entry into the Oscar category.
Our reviewer called the film “a tough, harrowing picture but also on that, curiously, remains optimistic and full of heart.” North American audiences will get some holiday cheer, Haneke-style, when “Amour” hits theater in limited release beginning on December 19th.
