The Satanic Temple Sues Netflix For $50 Million Over 'Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina' Statue

Sure, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is filled with campy dialogue, scares, style for days, and some strong social messages, but the Netflix series is also responsible for making Satanism seem pretty awesome. Well, that is if you sign the Book of the Beast. Well, one group thinks that ‘Sabrina’ went a little too far with its Satanism — the Satanic Temple.

In a new lawsuit filed against Netflix (via Variety), the Satanic Temple says that the hit series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” ripped off one their trademark Baphomet statue for the series. For those that don’t know, ‘Sabrina’ features a School of the Dark Arts (like Hogwarts but with tons of pentagrams). And in the center of the school sits a large statue of the demon Baphomet. And the temple suggests that Netflix decided to steal their copywritten design for their own use in the series, leading to the temple asking for a whopping $50 million in damages.

Now, before you think this is some sort of joke and that the Satanic Temple can’t be serious, you have to remember that this religious group has gained national notoriety for challenging school districts and government buildings for using the Ten Commandments and other Christian doctrines. Recently, the temple created the Baphomet statue in response to the Ten Commandments being represented at the Oklahoma Capitol.

The image of Baphomet is fairly common in Satanist imagery. However, the temple says that their statue features enough unique traits that make it an “original expression.” The statue features two children looking up at the figure, which is clearly used in the statue seen in the ‘Sabrina’ episodes.

We’ll have to see if the Satanic Temple gets their wish and is compensated for the alleged copyright infringement. In the meantime, go watch ‘Sabrina’ and worship Satan.
