Got a Tip?

Sony Planning To Kill Off Gwen Stacey In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Trilogy

nullWhat Emma Stone wants, Emma Stone gets? Back in August, the actress revealed that she was hoping her character of Gwen Stacey in "The Amazing Spider-Man" would stay true to the comics and meet an unfortunate end.  “Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident,” Stone explained about the appeal of the storyline, “So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing. Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that.” Now, it looks like Sony will.

Buried in THR's report yesterday about the "Divergent" casting of Shailene Woodley — who as you recall is now set to play Mary Jane Watson — the trade revealed that the actress' role is "only a very small part in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic 'Death of Gwen Stacy' story." Pretty ballsy stuff when you consider the first picture seemed to be a battle between reinvention or delivering the narrative comic fans are familiar with.

In the original comics, Green Goblin (is he coming back as a villain then?) throws Gwen off the Brooklyn Bridge, and Spidey uses his web to catch her. But the whiplash snaps her neck and kills her, leaving Spidey devastated. Enter Mary Jane, who helps Peter Parker grieve and in turn becomes his new flame. Heavy stuff, but an undeniably potent storyline.

Is this the right call? Do you like the direction they're taking the next two films? Weigh in below.
