Timothée Chalamet Reveals He "Wept For Hours" After Audition For 'White Boy Rick' & Talks Other Missed Roles

Timothée Chalamet is one of the hottest stars in film today. And no, that has nothing to do with his looks, although he is awfully dreamy. But I digress. Over the course of his relatively short career, Chalamet impressed audiences and critics last year with incredible performances in “Lady Bird” and “Call Me By Your Name.” The latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination. And this year, he hopes to earn yet another nom for his role in the highly-anticipated “Beautiful Boy.” But for the young actor, even as he’s being offered a ton of jobs, he still obsesses about the ones that got away.

In a new interview with Time Out, Chalamet is asked about his mindset during auditions. You can see that the actor is still very young and new to this idea of being a star because he still has nerves and gets emotionally drained after auditions.

He was asked if working so much on films, with little time off, starts to take its toll. He says, “I’d rather be stressed out over how much work I’m doing than sitting in an apartment on 163rd Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx, waiting for the phone to ring. Or taping an audition for ‘The Neon Demon’ that I rehearsed for a week and sent in, and they didn’t respond. Or for ‘The Theory of Everything’ or ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.’”

So, apparently, filmmakers Tim Burton, James Marsh, and Nicolas Winding Refn are just a few directors to pass up on Chalamet. Of course, this is pre-Oscar Chalamet, as we’re sure he could demand a role in any one of those three films if they were casting today.

But those aren’t the only roles that the young actor admits he was desperately wanting. One of the other awards contender films this season, “White Boy Rick,” which stars Matthew McConaughey and the unknown actor Richie Merritt, is a project that Chalamet auditioned for, only to be passed up.

He explains that he has a hard time divorcing himself from roles after auditioning, “I don’t deal with them – I don’t know how. Please tell me how. ‘White Boy Rick’ is a movie that’s coming out. I wept for hours after doing that audition.”

Things seem to have worked out for the best for Chalamet anyway. As mentioned, he’s already garnered an Academy Award nomination and seems well on his way to getting more nominations and eventually trophies. So while it stinks that he got passed up, let’s not cry for the actor just yet.

“Beautiful Boy” opens October 12.
