So far, the bromance between Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve is working out quite nicely. In addition to strong reviews, and some mild awards season talk, “Prisoners” opened at number one last weekend, marking a nice debut for the director’s first Hollywood outing and a bit of bounce back for the actor. And the pair have another movie on the way, one that is decidedly different.
Based on the novel by Jose Saramago, “Enemy” finds Gyllenhaal taking on dual roles, playing a paranoid teacher who believes he’s found his exact doppelganger, then starts trying to figure out who exactly this person is. And the movie, which we described as “part enigmatic existentialist thriller, part psychosexual drama” goes to some fascinating places. You can sense some of that nervy vibe in this new clip from the film, which finds Gyllenhaal stalking Mélanie Laurent on a Toronto city bus.
It’s one we suggest we put on your watch list for 2014 when A24 will release the film. Until then, check out the scene below. [The Film Stage]
