Sometimes, there is a script so good, that no matter the delays or bumps in the road, everyone wants to be a part of it. And that has been the case for "Triple Frontier." A project that was long brewing as a film for Kathryn Bigelow, at one time actors Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Will Smith, Javier Bardem and Christian Bale were all in the mix for various roles. The Bigelow iteration of the movie never came together, and she has since moved on to focus on her developing Bowe Bergdahl movie, but last summer "A Most Violent Year" and "All Is Lost" director J.C. Chandor signed up, and Hanks and Smith were both said to be circling. Instead, another actor has become the first A-list name to get seriously involved.
Variety reports that Johnny Depp is in early talks for the thriller. Penned by Mark Boal ("Zero Dark Thirty"), the story that takes place in the notorious, titular border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil called "la triple frontera," where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge, making it a haven for crime that’s difficult to monitor. Smith has apparently passed on the movie, but Hanks has an offer out to him, so presumably that means he likes the role he’s been looking at.
No word yet on when production will begin, but hopefully this news means cameras are aiming to start rolling soon.
