Got a Tip?

Richard Linklater To Direct Adaptation Of Bestseller ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’

Richard Linklater'Where'd You Go Bernadette'While "Boyhood" didn’t walk away with any hardware on Oscar night, except for the expected statue for Patricia Arquette (read our breakdown of "Birdman" vs. "Boyhood"), Richard Linklater is plenty busy. He’s already in post on his next film, "That’s What I’m Talking About," the spiritual sequel to "Dazed And Confused," and he’s got loose thoughts about a possible followup to "Boyhood." But another more solid project just landed on his table.

THR reports that Linklater is in talks to direct an adaptation of the bestseller "Where’d You Go, Bernadette." Written by Maria Semple, the story is another look at family, with a different narrative twist in regards to how the plot unfolds. Here’s the synopsis for the book to give you a better idea:

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle–and people in general–has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.
To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence–creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ("The Fault In Our Stars") wrote the script, so presumably this Annapurna co-production is ready to go. Linklater is never one to sit idle for too long, so it won’t be totally surprising if everyone involved is gung ho and this is shooting by the end of the year.
