Got a Tip?

Watch: Full Trailer For Women’s Rights Drama ‘Suffragette’ With Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, More

Suffragette"The mere fact that it’s taken 100 years for this story to be told is hugely revealing," Carey Mulligan said earlier this year. "This is the story of equal rights in Britain and it took years of struggle and women being tortured, abused and persecuted, and it’s never been put on screen." Well, it’s finally coming with a starry cast, and the awards season in its sights. Now the first full length trailer has landed.

The "Brick Lane" team of writer, Abi Morgan, and director, Sarah Gavron, are behind the cast that includes Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff, and Samuel West, which chronicles the struggles in the early days of the feminist movement whose aim was to get women the right to vote. Here’s the official synopsis:

SUFFRAGETTE is an intense drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The character of Maud, played by Carey Mulligan, is one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational.

"Suffragette" opens in the U.S. on October 23rd and in the U.K. on October 30th, and it will open the BFI London Film Festival. Are we looking at nominations for Mulligan and Streep already? Watch the U.S. and U.K. trailers below and let us know.
