While 1980's Oscar-winning directorial debut "Ordinary People" remains a potent and emotional picture, and 1994's "Quiz Show" is a rare and rich drama, Robert Redford's output behind the camera over the last decade or so can be characterised mostly by two words — 'sleep aid.' None of "The Legend of Bagger Vance," "Lions for Lambs" or "The Conspirator" had much of anything interesting to them, bar some solid, if unexceptional performances.
But still, hopes were high for "The Company You Keep," which premiered at Venice last week before heading to TIFF, seeing as it had a script by "The Limey" writer Lem Dobbs and an outstanding ensemble cast led by Redford and Shia LaBeouf, along with Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brit Marling and many, many more.
Our Toronto correspondent Simon Abrams' review was somewhat cool on the picture, but word's been relatively positive, at least in comparison to his last few films, and we're looking forward to checking it out for ourselves when Sony Pictures Classics release it in 2013. To wet the appetite, a brace of new images from the film have been released, and you can check them out below.
