“Even though everybody thinks of my movies as always about women, but in great measure, this movie has a great deal to say about men,” director Nancy Meyers told Buzzfeed today about her latest film “The Intern.” As the publication notes, she spent most of her career chronicling movies about milestones for women like marriage, birth, divorce and more in films like “Father of the Bride,” “Baby Boom,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “It’s Complicated.” And so “The Intern,” her latest comedy which stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, is really about a senior citizen (De Niro) trying to make his way back into the world after his wife dies. Here’s the official synopsis.
“The Intern,” De Niro stars as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway).
The film’s multi-generational cast also features Rene Russo (“Thor”), Anders Holm (“Workaholics”), Andrew Rannells (“Girls”), Adam Devine (“Pitch Perfect”), Celia Weston (“No Reservations”), Nat Wolff (“The Fault in Our Stars”), Linda Lavin (“Wanderlust”), Zack Pearlman (“The Inbetweeners”), newcomer Jason Orley, and Christina Scherer (“Living with Uncle Charlie”).
Too broad, too silly? Judge for yourself. “The Intern” is scheduled for release on September 25. Watch the first trailer below.
