With the studio superhero game plan these days to take characters and expand them outward in growing universes, the idea that they’ll take risks with standalone properties that don’t tie into the main, money-churning narrative seems slim. After all, that was the initial idea with “Ant-Man,” and look how that turned out. Nevertheless, Channing Tatum—newly anointed as Gambit—is hoping he’ll get a chance to shine solo before joining the rest of the X-Men clan over at Fox.
“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero,” Tatum told MTV. “He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”
While Tatum acknowledges that playing in the Marvel world is like “climbing a mountain,” he cautions that nothing is certain just yet. “Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing [official],” Tatum said. “There are only conversations and dreams right now, really.”
Basically, it seems like this is probably a long way off, with Fox likely trying to figure out how to work Gambit into the newly retconned X-Men universe. Thoughts? Let us know below.
