Daniel Craig Defends Racy ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Poster & Says He Was Shocked By The Violence In The Film

While he’s currently doing the press rounds for Jon Favreau‘s forthcoming alien invasion western “Cowboys & Aliens,” Daniel Craig continues to drop some interesting morsels about David Fincher‘s forthcoming “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Earlier in the month he compared the tone and seriousness of the picture to adult dramas of yesteryear like “The Godfather,” adding that the free rein Fincher has been given for his $100-million R-rated film left Craig “with my hand was over my mouth, going, ‘Are you fucking serious?’”

Well, the actor continues to tantalize us about the ‘Dragon Tattoo’ and speaking recently with Access Hollywood (via Thompson On Hollywood) also addresses the sort-of controversy surrounding that half-boobed poster that got people talking. Cries of “Sexism!” came from certain corners of the internet (or in comment sections of blogs, ahem) but Craig dismisses that chatter. “The biggest issue is sex — and it’s like, there’s nothing offensive about it,” Craig explained. “People have opinions about it, but I think it sort of works as a poster because [Rooney Mara] looks great. I think it sort of really illustrates the two characters in the movie very well.”

We’re sure that will get the whole argument spinning back up again, but it would seem a nipple pales in comparison to what Fincher is planning to unleash. “I was shocked by [the violence] — and I literally have seen [only] minutes of the movie,” Craig said. “But in the books, if you read the books, there’s this sort of implicit violence that’s going through them all the time that makes you turn the page because you’re not ever sure what’s going to happen next. And it’s in the movie. It’s there.” However as he also revealed earlier, it’s not so much the blood and guts as the tone that is not easy to stomach, as a lot of the brutal moments to appear to implied but are no less unnerving.

Undoubtedly, Fincher is conjuring up one the bleakest holiday films in recent memory, but with Rooney Mara’s performance already the subject of early buzz and based on one of the best selling procedural series of all time that shouldn’t stop the film from being a blockbuster. “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” opens on December 21st.
