Don’t worry if you forgot about this entirely — we kinda did — but last year, before he became on Oscar winner, Trent Reznor struck a deal with HBO and BBC for a mini-series adaptation of Nine Inch Nail’s 2007 dystopian concept album Year Zero. Not much has been heard about it since then, but for such a, high concept effort, it looks like they’ve tapped the right man to do the job.
THR reports that Jim Uhls, the writer of “Fight Club” and “Jumper,” has been hired to pen the adaptation. In case your not up on your alternative music lore, NIN’s Year Zero was a critique of contemporary U.S. government’s policies (ie. the Bush years) and the exploration of ideas of their implications in the year 2022. It’s presumed that a futuristic, sci-fi vision of Reznor’s album will be created.
The project seems to be moving at its own (slow) pace, but with Uhls now on board, it should start rolling a bit more quickly. No directors have been named, but that’s likely the next step. What we’re most curious about is whether or not “Year Zero” will adopt the same creative marketing Reznor used for the album. At the time, the release of the disc was notable the campaign that included an alternative-reality game, various online elements and, on a much simpler note, the release of music through hidden USB drives at concerts. We’d guess that Reznor will want to do something similar for his fans this time around as well.
