The Cannes Film Festival ended just over a month ago, but it looks like we can start speculating about what will appear next year already, as a highly anticipated film has justed landed a release date in France that just happens to coincide with festival's opening.
According to the film's official Facebook page, Michel Gondry's "Mood Indigo" has been slated for a May 15, 2013 release date — the first day of Cannes. This year alone, the festival premiered Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," Jacques Audiard's "Rust And Bone," Walter Salles' "On The Road" and David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" all on or near their releases in France. Could Thierry Fremaux be looking to have the helmer open the festival in 2013? With a red carpet-worthy, starry French cast already in place as well, we're sure phone calls are being made.
Starring Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh, Charlotte Lebon, Alain Chabat, Aissa Maiga, Philipe Torrenton and Natacha Regnier, the film is based on Boris Vian's 1947 novel, "L'Ecume des jours," and tells the tale of Colin (Duris), the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument, the pianocktail. He marries Chloe (Tautou), but unfortunately, she falls ill during their honeymoon thanks to a water lily that enters her lung, and the only way to treat the ailment is to surround her with fresh flowers — an expense that soon drains his funds. The first images from the film have been perfectly Gondry-esque and the material is so perfectly in his wheelhouse it seems like a slam dunk.
StudioCanal will release the film in France, but no U.S. distributor is on board just yet.
