The phenomenon that was known as “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” touched upon kids of a certain age in the 1990s, with the color palette-based teenage heroes capturing the imagination. It was seriously terrible, and yet, it was also a sensation, enough that in 1995, the TV show went to the big screen with “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.” It wasn’t exactly a hit, with the summer movie flopping hard, but the franchise has continued on television fairly strong, so now the plan is to bring these kids back to the multiplex.
Lionsgate and Saban have announced plans for a live action reboot of ‘Power Rangers,’ one they promise will “re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.” How will they do that? We suppose by dipping into the “deep and detailed mythology,” as they say. Good luck, guys. At the very least it can’t be worse than the 1995 movie, right?
Meanwhile, in more TV-to-movie news, Deadline reports that the 1960s sitcom “Green Acres” is being revived, not just for a movie, but a Broadway show, too. Maybe your parents will be excited. Production company Hollywood Media Bridge is on the hunt for a writer/director to tackle the story of the aw-shucks folks from Hooterville, and of course, the wacky Douglas clan. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, we suppose, but we find it hard to muster any excitement for this (or ‘Power Rangers’ for that matter).
