Got a Tip?

‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ Director David Lowery To Helm Disney Remake Of ‘Pete’s Dragon’

Pete’s Dragon (David LoweryOne of our Breakout Directors Of 2013, there’s no doubt David Lowery got a ton of attention following his beautiful breakthrough feature "Ain’t Them Bodies Saints." Ever since the film premiered at Sundance last year, he’s been racking up gig after gig:  writing and directing "The Old Man And The Gun," with Robert Redford slated to star and producewriting and directing former David Fincher project "Torso"; producing Alex Ross Perry‘s upcoming "Listen Up Philip"; writing and directing the sci-fi "Two" with Casey Affleck set to star; writing and directing an adaptation of the National Book Award Finalist “The Yellow Birds”; and recently getting behind the camera for an episode of "Rectify" for season two. And it looks like he might be making the blockbuster leap next.

Hired last year to write Disney‘s remake of "Pete’s Dragon," he’s now in negotiations to direct as well. The original 1977 movie tells the story of a boy and his invisible, magical dragon who flee from his abusive parents. Toby Halbrooks (a longtime collaborator with Lowery) co-wrote the script that apparently "reinvents" the core of the film, with this new take said to drop the musical elements of the original. There’s no word yet on where this will fit in Lowery’s already ridiculously packed schedule, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

But frankly, if there’s one guy in Hollywood we love to see with an embarrassment of options, it’s Lowery. And we’d certainly be curious to see what he’d bring to a bigger canvas and studio money to play with. [The Wrap]
