Patrick Wilson Says He Wouldn’t Mind A Crack At Supes Role
The last few days have landed a few interesting bits of “Superman”-related news.
On a “Conan“ appearance, “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm seemed to laugh off rumors of his involvement in Zack Snyder‘s “Superman: The Man Of Steel.” While Hamm didn’t outright deny his rumored participation (at this point it wouldn’t be much more than, “are you possibly interested?” or taking a meeting), his comments suggest that he’s far too old for what they are looking for. “Everyone wants to see a middle aged Superman with the power of handicapped parking,” Hamm joked. “[Everyone wants to see a Superman] who has to buy a fast car and date a younger woman to feel alive.” You can see the clip for yourself below which starts around the 6:38 mark.
Incidentally, how does Bryan Singer feel about this having directed “Superman Returns” and not getting a crack at the proposed sequel? He’s cool with it, and more importantly, he’s almost been too busy to care. “At the time I left, it would be more odd [to be replaced] than it is now, “Singer told The Geek Files. “Because it’s been four years, my brain is so occupied. I’m sort of like a tennis ball – I bounced from the ‘X-Men‘ to ‘Superman’ and back to ‘X-Men’ so I’ve been in that world a while, and then I’m doing this other film (‘Jack the Giant Killer‘) at Warners, which is where I did Superman, so I’m with the same people.So now it [the new Superman film] makes sense. It’s a movie I would want to see, I think Zack’s so talented and I applaud Warner and Legendary for choosing somebody who’s a filmmaker and not necessarily just a shooter.”
Meanwhile, and a bit randomly, actor Patrick Wilson — who not so coincidentally played a superhero in Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” — says he wouldn’t mind getting a chance at playing the man of steel. “When I heard he signed on I called one of my agents and said that I hadn’t talked to Zack or anything but that I just wanted to read it. I don’t even care if I’m right for anything, I just want to know what he’s doing,” he told MovieWeb recently. We would normally think this is a ridiculous idea that would never happen, but with Snyder you can never tell about creative choices, and for all we know he’s planning on having Malin Akerman play Lois Lane.
Snyder recently said “the internet has no idea what’s going on” regarding all the “Man Of Steel,” rumors and by that we hope he’s directly responding to claims that he’s right for the job and therefore will jump ship paving the way for someone with tonal sensibilities, but alas that’s not going to happen.
Written by David Goyer (“The Dark Knight“) and godfather-produced by Christopher Nolan, it’ll be interesting to see how a collaboration by those two is then filtered through the “visionary” directing eyes of Zack Snyder. “Superman: The Man Of Steel,” is scheduled to hit theaters December 2012 and with the Siegel & Shuster family lawsuit still ongoing (though recently delayed) which forces Warners to be in production by 2011, this one is going forward whether the script is ready or not. Let’s just hope it’s not one of those situations where Goyer and Nolan are preoccupied with “The Dark Knight Rises” and Snyder is forced to turn to other writers to fill in any last minute blanks. After all he keeps calling it all “very early.”
Last but not least there are some new hilarious “Superman” rumors that target Dwayne Johnson, John Cena and “True Blood” actor Joe Manganiello. On Twitter, Manganiello said, “Just to be clear… as of today, I am not ‘negotiating’ to play Superman,” he wrote. “But keep your fingers crossed and thanks for the wishful thinking!” In other words, no sale, “but good god, I’d love that.”
