From beloved childhood classic to bloated never-ending franchise? Well, it’s not like Sony, Dan Aykroyd and the rest of the "Ghostbusters" team have ever been shy about milking the movies for all they’re worth. From animated shows to videogames, "Ghostbusters" has definitely crossed over into different media arenas. And it’s not a shock that franchise shepherd Aykroyd has seen what the folks over at Marvel are doing and wants to apply it to his supernatural series.
"It’s up on blocks, it needs new electronics, new everything," Akyroyd said about the franchise while in London (via THR). "That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of ‘Ghostbusters’ has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas."
And granted, he’s still riffing on concepts at this point, but it looks like he wants to fill in every possible gap in the lives of these characters, and tell a grand story. And that means thinking outside the box on and not just about "another movie or another TV show, but what’s the totality of it? The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school."
Interesting words from Aykroyd as a 2015 shoot for "Ghostbusters 3" is apparently looming, with the latest rumors suggesting/hoping for a female-led reboot, which Aykroyd seems to dismiss, saying, "We need to write it." Maybe because more world building needs to happen first? Is "Ghostbusters" a series we need to see turned into an epic saga? Let us know below.
