George Miller Says 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Sequel Story Doesn't Involve Furiosa

While George Miller has recently said he’s got two sequel scripts in the works for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the director has also stated he wants to make a smaller, non-blockbuster movie next. All that said, it has been the general understanding (or hope) that Charlize Theron would reprise her role as the badass Furiosa (possibly even in a spin-off), even though the actress has already said she’s not signed for a sequel, and reportedly had a difficult time shooting with Tom Hardy (who is inked for three more films). However, Miller has revealed that wherever the franchise goes next, Furiosa won’t be at the center of it.

“I’m not sure, is the answer,” the director told Digital Spy when asked about Theron returning for the ‘Fury Road’ followup. “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”

Miller also revealed that “The Wasteland” — touted as a potential sequel name — is just a “working title,” and while he confirms there are “discussions” about the ‘Fury Road’ sequels, he’s still doing that small movie next. However, Miller has recently been linked with talks about directing “Man Of Steel 2” (which he has stated he won’t do), which is perhaps not surprising given he has once slated to helm “Justice League” for Warner Bros. years ago before the project fell apart, with the studio since rebuilding the approach for their DC Comics‘ properties. And IGN asked the director what his approach for ‘Superman’ would’ve been.

“I think it’s been said many times before: he’s potentially a very boring character because he has no faults,” Miller said. “So you really have to find his demons really to get an internal conflict going. You’ve really got to do that. Whether that’s by an external agency or something deep inside himself. You need that conflicted character. That’s what made the Greek gods so great. I mean they were jealous, vengeful, hubristic. They had all these things going for them. I think that’s why Batman’s such an interesting character because he’s human, so he’s just like us. He’s relatable, rather than someone who’s just perfect.”

Say what you will about Zack Snyder‘s approach, but the filmmaker has at least created a Superman that seems to address Miller’s concerns with the character.
