Media Rights Capital have emerged as one of the most interesting production companies of the last few years (that is, outside of Annapurna Pictures). Aligning themselves with unique directors and riskier projects, the company has been behind a diverse slate including "Bruno," "The Adjustment Bureau," Seth MacFarlane's "Ted," David Fincher and Kevin Spacey's "House Of Cards" and Neill Blomkamp's mysterious sci-fi effort "Elysium." And now they're pairing up with another helmer whose name has been on the tip of many tongues.
"The Raid: Redemption" director Gareth Evans now has backing for his English language debut, a film he will write and direct — and that's about all that's known for now. No, it's not the heist flick "Breaking The Bank" that he signed up for at Universal last month, but instead it's a drama and the details are being kept under wraps, though the story does call for two male leads. But before he gets to that, Evans will press on and shoot "Berandal" his sequel to 'The Raid' next, with the English language movie to lens afterward sometime in 2013.
No matter what you thought of "The Raid," there is no doubt it has served as one helluva calling card for Evans whose future looks bright. If "Berandal" can up the thrills for fans of "The Raid" he will have fully arrived. Sony already believes in the project having snatched up the rights, and we doubt it will be too long before studios/distributors come sniffing around Evans' English drama. [Deadline]
