“This is a world where nothing is solved,” Matthew McConaughey‘s Rust Cohle declares in this new trailer for “True Detective.” And it might seem an odd choice of words for a series built around a mystery that spans years, also ensnaring fellow detective Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), but that’s just a jumping off point. Written by Nic Pizzolatto, and directed by Cary Fukunaga (“Sin Nombre,” “Jane Eyre“) the series will use a serious crime to deal with themes of death and darkness.
“To achieve a personal vision that deeply investigates character, it makes sense to choose as a delivery vehicle a genre where an investigation is already underway,” Pizzolatto told the LA Times about the series, one that he doesn’t want to fit neatly into a predictable box.
“You can probably tell I don’t give a … about serial killers, and I certainly don’t care to engage in some sort of creative cultural competition for who can invent the most disgusting kind of serial killer,” he added. “This is just a vehicle. You could have engaged the same obsessions in a doughnut shop. But the show probably wouldn’t have sold.”
Even if it were set in a doughnut shop, with this cast and talent, we’d watch ’em anywhere. “True Detective” debuts on Sunday, January 12th at 9 PM. Watch the new trailer below.
