After a flurry of activity, with four films in five years (having taken the previous fifteen years to make his first five movies) between 2007's "Zodiac" and 2011's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," David Fincher hasn't been in a rush to pick his next movie. There's a number of possibilities in the mix — among them the 'Dragon Tattoo' sequel "The Girl Who Played With Fire," and the long-gestating "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" — but none have, publicly at least, made great strides towards production, so we're unlikely to see a new film from the director until the middle of 2014 at the earliest.
But Fincher fans shouldn't despair too much, because we're only a few months away from seeing new work from the "Fight Club" director. Fincher spent much of this year working on "House of Cards," a remake of the BBC TV political thriller transposed to Washington, and starring Kevin Spacey as Francis Urquhart, the Machiavellian chief whip of the House of Representatives on a ruthless quest for power. And now, the New York Times have announced that the series, produced by Media Rights Capital and picked up last year by Netflix as their most high-profile original series to date, will be available to view on the streaming service from February 1st.
And as is becoming Netflix's metier, the show's not going to be going out piecemeal: the series will be released in one big chunk, with all 13 episodes available to view from day one. As you might imagine, Fincher didn't direct all thirteen episodes of the show (written by "The Ides Of March" co-writer Beau Willimon) — he handled the first two, with names like James Foley ("Glengarry Glen Ross"), Carl Franklin ("Devil In A Blue Dress") and, perhaps most eyebrow-raising, Joel Schumacher ("Batman And Robin") among the other helmers involved.
As fans of the source material, and political drama in general, we've been excited about this for a while, especially with a cast that also includes Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Michael Kelly ("Chronicle"), Kristen Connolly ("Cabin In The Woods"), Corey Stoll ("Midnight In Paris') and Mahershali Ali ("The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button").
