Summer is coming, and we know you want to be outside, but should the rains come or if you’re stuck on a long car ride, Criterion has got you covered in July, announcing a new slate of titles.
First up, David Cronenberg‘s “Scanners” gets the Criterion treatment, and it’s coming packed with features. Not only does the film have a brand new transfer, the set comes with Cronenberg’s first film “Stereo,” a new documentary about the film’s special effects, vintage interviews and more. It’s enough to make your head explode.
Next, Lawrence Kasdan‘s seminal, baby boomer drama “The Big Chill” joins the collection. With the film celebrating its 25th anniversary at TIFF last year, Criterion has wisely grabbed footage from that event and put it on the upcoming release that also includes a documentary about the making of the movie, and a whole new transfer for your eyes and ears. But really, no commentary or participation from any of the cast?
Lastly, six films by Jacques Demy—”Lola,” “Bay Of Angels,” “The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg,” “The Young Girls Of Rochefort,” “Donkey Skin” and “Une Chambre En Ville“—get collected in “The Essential Jacques Demy.” A whole raft of extras too numerous to list here are included, so this one will be well worth the coin.
As for titles getting upgrades, Erik Skjoldbjærg‘s “Insomnia” and Robert Bresson‘s “Pickpocket” go Blu.
