Got a Tip?

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Director Niels Arden Oplev Ready To Delve Into ‘Game Theory’

While Noomi Rapace has quickly capitalized on the success of the Swedish language “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” films, with roles in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows” and “Prometheus” on the way, director Niels Arden Oplev‘s steps into Hollywood have been a bit more tentative. Last fall he was attached to direct the thriller “The Keep” for CBS Films though there hasn’t been much movement since; he’s also potentially got the Afghan war drama “The Last Photograph” with Christian Bale and possibly Sean Penn in the lead roles and he’s also stepped over to television, directing the pilot episode of “The Rememberer” (yes, that’s the name) a CBS procedural that sounds terrible. Well, one more project has been stacked up as his possible U.S. debut.

Deadline reports that Oplev is in negotiations to direct “Game Theory” over at Summit. Written by Michael Alan Lerner, the quick logline reveals that it “centers on a college professor and game theorist who gets sucked into a large-scale global crisis.” Speaking broadly, “game theory” is a method used to study social sciences, biology and economics in which one person’s “success” comes as a result and choices of another person’s “loss.” Again, that’s pretty simplified and we’d wager that’s about as much as you’d need to know for the movie.

Not much else is known at this time or where it might fall in Oplev’s order of business, but he’s wisely not rushing into anything just yet. However, aside from ‘Photograph,’ we just wish his choices for films were more interesting because it mostly seems he’s being given second tier thrillers that are exactly the kind of thing a studio exec would say, “Hey, let’s try this out with that ‘Dragon Tattoo’ guy.”
