One film we had hoped would make an appearance on the fall festival slate this year was Roman Coppola's first film in over a decade, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III." And while that hasn't happened, we suppose the next best thing has come along — the first official images from the '70s-set comedy.
Led by a post-warlock Charlie Sheen, with an ensemble cast to kill for including Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Patricia Arquette, Aubrey Plaza, Katheryn Winnick and more, while EW breaks it down with Coppola as to what role each actor plays, here's what you really need to know. Sheen stars as a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women, but his life soon downward spirals into doubt, confusion and reflection when his girlfriend breaks up with him, leading Charlie on the road to self-evaluation. So yeah, there seems to be some meta notes in there between Charles Swan and the real life Charlie Sheen (though Coppola downplays it), however the most intriguing nugget is how the film will play with reality a little bit.
"It’s not strictly realistic. In the film, because some of the sequences take place in the imagination of the main character, it goes to fantastical circumstances and settings," Coppola says. "There’s a western sequence, there’s an underground spy-agency sequence. There are some playful touches that, for me, are cued off this main character, whose professional life is creating imagery, stylized imagery like album cover art." So for those of you who dug Coppola's sci-fi riff in "CQ," it looks like that playfulness will be in effect here.
'Charles Swan' is now slated to hit theaters in February via new indie distributor A24. Perhaps a stop at Sundance first? We'll see, but let's hope a trailer is around the corner.
