Now that Sundance ’13 is officially underway, as expected, more clips and trailers are popping up online from some of the festival’s most anticipated films. One such film is “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes.” This upcoming drama, from "Tanner Hall" director Francesca Gregorini stars Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario and in the one-minute clip, we get to catch a glimpse of their characters, as well as the film’s style and tone.
The film follows Emanuel (rising star Scodelario, of "Wuthering Heights" and "Skins"), a troubled teenage girl who becomes obsessed with a next-door neighbor (Jessica Biel) who has just moved into town and bears a strong resemblance to Emanuel’s deceased mother. The two get to know each other better, with Emanuel babysitting the neighbor’s newborn daughter, and they soon develop a close bond with each other. This is the second film from writer/director Gregorini, and it also features Frances O’Connor and Alfred Molina.
It should be interesting to see Scodelario, tipped by many as a potential to be this year's Felicity Jones/Carey Mulligan-esque Sundance darling, get a chance to show off her dramatic range and lead a movie. Plus, Alfred Molina is always a welcome sight to see in any film. “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes” has no distributor lined up, but if it does well enough at Sundance (the film has its first screening later today), we’re sure to hear more about this film down the road.
