While 2011 was a banner year for the British box office, there was one success story that proved more surprising than any others. It was a film that, despite costing a fraction of the competition, outearned "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "The Hangover Part II," "Transformers: The Dark Of The Moon" and "Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows," and doubled the grosses of films like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Fast Five" and "Cars 2," becoming one of the most successful British comedies in history. That film was "The Inbetweeners Movie," a big-screen version of the popular TV teen comedy (which airs on BBC America in the U.S.), and now, it's finally coming to the U.S.
Newly titled "The Inbetweeners," Wrekin Hill Entertainment will bring the movie to U.S. theaters on September 7th, and in additoin to the release date, we have the exclusive poster for the film which you can check out below. Described as "The British answer to 'American Pie,'" the film follows Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison), four hapless teenagers who head to Greece for a holiday where they chase girls and getting up to all kinds of hijinks.
The film is written by series creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley ("Flight of the Conchords") who commented, "We're delighted that our film is being released by Wrekin Hill in the U.S., and hope that in the year of the Jubilee and Olympics it can go some way towards restoring a balanced view of the British. In the U.K. it spent as long at the top of the box office as the final 'Harry Potter' film, and we will be delighted if Americans take these four other British teenagers to their hearts in the same way." Meanwhile Wrekin Hill head Chris Ball adds, "We think American audiences will be equally charmed and 'offended' by this film."
The film's soundtrack also features original music from Mike Skinner of The Streets, along with tracks from Everything Everything, Morning Runner, The Vines and Miles Kane and more. "The Inbetweeners" picked up strong reviews when it bowed in the U.K. (with comparisons to "Superbad" flying), and the ingredients are certainly there for a late summer sleeper hit when it opens on September 7th.
