Can "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" follow in the footsteps of films like "Precious" and "Blue Valentine" by going from Sundance to Cannes to awards season praise? We'll soon find out, but unlike those films, it's pretty difficult to describe exactly what this film is. Which makes it all the more exciting.
The feature directorial debut of Benh Zeitlin, the film is centered around the pint-sized, but fearless Hushpuppy (a pretty ferocious performance by newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) who lives with her Daddy in the The Bathtub, which is essentially New Orleans. And that's about all we're willing to tell you about the movie, because what actually happens in it is something close to magical realism. The story is told through her eyes — essentially a child's perspective — and thus everything takes on dimensions that are heightened by the emotion one feels at that age. It's impressive and moving stuff, strange for sure, but one that rewards viewers for sticking with it.
A new clip from the film has arrived, and don't worry about spoilers. It's from pretty early on in the picture, so go ahead and click away. "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" opens on June 27th.
