Something had to give, and right in the middle of Comic-Con no less! Warner Bros. has officially moved the Christopher Nolan-produced, Zack Snyder directed, Superman movie “Man of Steel” from December 2012 to June, 14, 2013. December 2012 is already stacked: Fox‘s “Life Of Pi,” Quentin Tarantino‘s “Django Unchained,” Disney‘s “Lone Ranger” and perhaps more importantly, a competing WB film, Peter Jackson‘s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
It’s a smart play on WB’s part as they’ll want to put all their marketing mojo into “The Hobbit,” and summer 2013 is so far pretty clear in terms of competition — the biggest piece of counteraction is far off as “Iron Man 3” arrives on May 3.
Overall, creatively it’s not a bad idea either. It gives the creative time to get over those pesky third-act issues and ideally, it’ll give Christopher Nolan more time to give notes, pointers and whatever feedback necessary to make a Zack Snyder film more like a Christopher Nolan one. May we suggest he should also direct all the inevitable reshoots? 🙂
To note: for the copyright to hold, production has to begin before the end of 2012 — which it will — and doesn’t have to be released before 2012. WB is in the clear. One suspects the timing of this move is a plot for WB/Legendary to have nerds talking about the super hero film during Comic-Con without actually having to reveal anything, smart.
“Man Of Steel” stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond Harry Lennix and Christopher Meloni. We assume casting is done, but who knows with the tight-lipped Nolan camp.
