While it’s arguably a few years too late — though movies do take a long time to make — we are finally seeing an echo of the rage and frustration that came out of the 2008 financial collapse where the U.S. government bailed out the banks for their own reckless mistakes.
It’s the same anger you’ve seen in Bernie Sanders’ campaign and rallying cries about the lack of Wall Street oversight. We’ve seen “The Big Short” as a Best Picture Oscar contender tackle this subject, seen it on a more personal and human level in “99 Homes” and now we’re seeing yet another iteration of these frustrations in “Money Monster,” a thriller from director Jodie Foster starring George Clooney. The movie essentially centers on a loudmouth TV talking head expert on finance who is held hostage by a man enraged by his own personal misfortunes. Here’s the official synopsis:
In the real-time, high stakes thriller Money Monster, George Clooney and Julia Roberts star as financial TV host Lee Gates and his producer Patty, who are put in an explosive situation when an irate investor who has lost everything (Jack O’Connell) forcefully takes over their studio. During a tense standoff broadcast to millions on live TV, Lee and Patty must work furiously against the clock to unravel the mystery behind a conspiracy at the heart of today’s fast-paced, high-tech global markets.
