Watch: Beautiful U.S. Trailer For Pawel Pawlikowski’s ‘Ida’

“Absolutely stunning, one of the year’s best films,” declared our own Oliver Lyttelton (as you’ll see below in the new trailer) when he saw Pawel Pawlikowski‘s “Ida” at the BFI London Film Festival last year. And Jessica Kiang was taken with the movie as well at the Marrakech Film Festival, calling it “thoughtful, artful” filmmaking. Now it’s time for everyone else to experience what folks on the festival circuit saw.

The U.S. trailer for “Ida” has arrived and it’s pretty beautiful stuff. Led by Agata Trzebuchowska, the film tells the story of 18-year-old orphan Anna, raised in a convent, who is preparing to become a nun when she’s told she must first visit her only living relative. It leads to Anna discovering her complicated past, including her real name, heritage and the fate of her parents. And shot in black-and-white pretty gorgeously by Pawlikowski, this looks like powerful, evocative stuff.

“Ida” opens on May 2nd in New York and Los Angeles. Watch below.
