'Animal Kingdom' To Become A TV Series On Showtime

nullStop us if this sounds familiar. But following in the footsteps of movies turning into TV shows this year including, "The Kids Are All Right," "The Transporter," "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Anger Management," "Zombieland," "Universal Soldier" and more, yet another film is headed to the small screen. And this one is a pretty inspired choice.

The excellent, searing Aussie crime family drama "Animal Kingdom" will be headed to Showtime for a brand new series, Deadline reports. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem like any of the filmmakers are actually involved, which is a bit of a bummer, but John Wells ("Southland," "Mildred Pierce") and Jonathan Lisco ("Southland," "K-Ville") are executive producing the series, with the latter taking on writing duties. If somehow you missed the film directed by David Michod (and you should fix that error as soon as possible), the film was inspired by the true story of the Melbourne based Pettingill crime family, and told the tale of their downfall and the machinations of its matriarch, played by chilling and Oscar-nominated Jacki Weaver.

As for the series, it will jump to an earlier point in time and tell the tale of the crime family's battle with police and the people who get caught in the middle. We have to say, this actually sounds like a pretty good idea, especially for cable where it can be as dark as it wants without the handicaps that network fare faces. Multiple seasons watching the inner workings of this twisted crime family? Hell yeah. Some pretty great roles in here too, and if cast right and written well, this could be one to watch.

Still early days, but definitely one to watch develop for now. We'd rather this than "Unviersal Soldier," that's for sure.
