Our review of Terrence Malick‘s "Knight Of Cups" will arrive later today, but is the director moving from "The Tree Of Life" to The Tree Of The Soul? If we’re going by the first poster for his upcoming film, that appears to be the case.
Boasting none of the big name cast — led by Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman — the one-sheet is instead an illustration from 1764 by mystical and alchemical writer Dionysius Andreas Freher entitled "The Tree Of The Soul." He was particularly fascinated by the ideas of Jacob Boehme, a mystic and theologian who believed that humans fall from grace, and that in order to find God again, we have to go through hell first. Now, how about that for the thematic undertone to a film about a man who finds his life filled with emptiness?
Fascinating stuff. Check out the poster below, and here’s a bonus treat: someone asking a question to an obviously absent Terrence Malick at the film’s Berlin International Film Festival press conference.
