Got a Tip?

Joe Carnahan Says Pitch For “Serpico-Styled” ‘Daredevil’ “Went Up In Smoke”

null….and the clock keeps ticking. With an October 10th deadline looming before Fox loses the rights to "Daredevil," it seems their search to find a director may not be over. In July, previously attached helmer David Slade exited the picture, and just over a week ago, word hit that Fox was reaching out a hand to Joe Carnahan to take over. Well, that meeting took place, and apparently it did not go well.

The director hit Twitter late last night to tell fans: "Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids. We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone's side." It seems Fox might be back to square one all over again, but one has to wonder just what they were expecting from Carnahan, not only given his style and aesthetic, but also based on the source material they're apparently using.

Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s "Born Again" has been cited as the starting point for the movie, and it's pretty dark stuff. The story reveals that Karen Page leaves the law offices of Nelson & Murdock to make it big as an actress, but instead succumbs to heroin addiction and begins starring in porno movies. Desperate for a hit, she sells off Matt Murdock's alter ego, and it's not long before Kingpin uses the info to drive Murdock to destitution and insanity. But yeah, it's pretty R-rated fare — or, at least, a bit more grim than the rest of Fox's superhero movie output to date. So perhaps that's why they're balking at the moment?

Either way, it's another roadblock for the studio who need to sort something out with Marvel/Disney fast to retain the rights, or they'll watch them disappear. We have to admit, we like Carnahan for the gig, and certainly he seemed inspired, and fans will have a lot to say as the next few weeks play out. Do you think Fox is making a mistake? Weigh in below.
